How Does the Parathyroid Affect Bone? (+Video)

Q: How does the parathyroid affect bone?

At the Center for Better Bones we always advocate checking to find out the root cause for a diagnosis of osteoporosis. One place to look is with the parathyroid glands. These glands monitor your blood and make sure your body’s blood calcium stays stable. Whether too high or too low, an unstable calcium level is a life-threatening situation and your body will react to correct it.  When the parathyroid is overactive, it can break down too much bone, leading to osteoporosis. This situation is called hyperparathyroidism and doctors can easily check for it. If this is something you may be concerned about, we always encourage you to talk to your doctor.
