Susan E. Brown, PhD: the bone health nutritionist

Susan E. Brown, PhD

Dr. Susan E. Brown, PhD, CNS, is a medical anthropologist and a New York State Certified Nutritionist. She has more than 20 years of experience in clinical nutrition, bone health research, and lay and health professional education. She has consulted widely on socioeconomic, cultural, educational, and health issues. Dr. Brown has taught in both North and South American universities and has authored numerous academic and popular articles.

Academic background

She received her doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1972 and is the recipient of two Fulbright–Hays Scholar Awards, as well as an Organization of American States Research Fellowship, and is a member of Sigma Xi, the honorary Scientific Research Organization of North America. In the fall of 2002, Dr. Brown was appointed research associate at the Department of Anthropology of Syracuse University.

Dr. Brown specializes in osteoporosis and osteopenia and is an expert in their prevention, halting, and management. She is a researcher, writer, consultant, and clinician. In addition to her other activities, Susan Brown offers individualized consulting services for those seeking to maximize bone health. Over the past two decades, she has helped motivated individuals from around the world establish life-supporting bone-building programs. She develops individualized and practical bone-strengthening programs for each client through a step-by-step process, the Women to Women Personal Program for Better Bones, which helps each client build “better bones and a better body.”

While Dr. Brown currently specializes in osteoporosis and bone health, she is also an expert in the development of programs for immune enhancement. For 10 years, she taught physicians and patients the ELISA/ACT Biotechnologies Program® for immune enhancement, as developed by Dr. Russell Jaffe. With this program she has been able to help hundreds of people regain health in the face of allergy, autoimmune disease, and inflammatory disorders such as fibromyalgia, migraine, irritable bowel, interstitial cystitis, and the like. In addition to her work with bone health, Dr. Brown continues to assist those with allergy, autoimmune disease, and other immune-mediated and inflammatory disorders.

Director of the Better Bones Foundation

In 1986, Dr. Brown created the Osteoporosis Education Project (OEP), renamed as the Better Bones Foundation (BBF) in 2008. This nonprofit research foundation has distinguished itself as a “thought leader” in the exploration of bone health optimization. At the BBF, Dr. Brown conducts small clinical trials on promising nutritional and lifestyle bone-building therapies, conducts public awareness campaigns, and presses forward on a daily basis “rethinking” osteoporosis and bone health maximization.
