About Osteoporosis Education Project

The Osteoporosis Education Project (OEP) is a US tax-exempt, 501 (c) 3 non-profit research and osteoporosis education organization dedicated to the advancement of bone health world-wide. OEP is a division of Leading Edge Research, Inc. of East Syracuse, N.Y., USA.

Susan E. Brown, Ph.D., and CCN founded the Osteoporosis Education Project in 1986. Between 1986 and 1996 the OEP focused its efforts on rethinking the nature, causes and best prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Dr. Brown's book, Better Bones, Better Body, first published by Keats in 1996, presents our new groundbreaking perspectives.

With the publication of Better Bones, Better Body, Dr. Brown was invited by various groups to lecture on nutritional and lifestyle approaches to bone health. In the intervening years she has made presentations in London, Rio de Janeiro, various cities within Canada and throughout the US.

At the same time we were sharing our new perspectives and understandings detailed in Better Bones, Better Body, we initiated testing of various promising nutrition and lifestyle approaches to the promotion of bone health. Summaries of our pilot clinical studies secondary research and can be found in the Completed Research section.

As of Spring 2004 the Osteoporosis Education Project continues its research and education on nutrition and lifestyle factors influencing bone health. Currently our focus is on (1) Geriatric fracture reduction and the special nutrient needs of the elderly; (2) The pediatric origins of osteoporosis; and (3) Enhancement of public awareness about the newly discovered importance, and multi-faceted roles, of Vitamin D and Vitamin K.

Most recently, in collaboration with Dr. Susan E. Brown and the Nutrition Education and Consulting Service, OEP has expanded its services to include the development and delivery of continuing education courses for health professionals. For information on these CEU lectures please contact Janet Bender at 315-432-1676.

The Osteoporosis Education Project is funded through our consulting, research and lecture services, supplemented by the sale of our books, pH Test Kits and select products and donations. We welcome contributions and support from allied professionals, organizations, institutions, corporations and individuals. If you would like additional information on becoming a donor or are interested in collaborating in our bone health research and/or osteoporosis education efforts, please contact us at:
