Looking around the world we find that osteoporosis it is not simply something that always happens to us "as we age", but rather it is another of the degenerative diseases that occurs more in the highly industrialized countries than in traditional cultures.

Around the world, osteoporotic hip fracture rates vary from country to country some 30 fold for women and some 16 times fold for men. The highest rates are found in the more "developed" countries. For example, scientists have not been able to find any signs of osteoporosis among the Mayan Indians of Central America and some researchers estimate the Chinese fracture rate to be one-fifth of ours.
