Bone Health E-Newsletter
May 2008
Greetings!

It is with great pleasure that we announce that the Osteoporosis Education Project, under the directorship of Dr. Susan Brown, has just published an article in the March 2008 issue of Alternative Medicine Review re-evaluating the scientific studies on vitamin D and fracture reduction. In this newsletter we share our findings, which suggest that osteoporotic fractures can be reduced by 50 to 60% when adequate vitamin D levels are achieved.

Hip fractureDuring 2006-2007, the Osteoporosis Education Project undertook a comprehensive analysis of the scientific literature on vitamin D, with the goal of reassessing and rethinking the role of vitamin D in fracture prevention. This article summarizes the research findings that vitamin D is a more powerful fracture-prevention agent than previously suggested.

The OEP concludes that the achievement of universal vitamin  D sufficiency is the foundation for, and the first prerequisite of, osteoporotic fracture prevention.

Vitamin D & the sunThe last few years have seen an explosion of research on vitamin D. Hundreds of studies link low vitamin D levels to an array of diseases ranging from osteoporosis, auto-immune disease, and cardiovascular disease to diabetes, depression, and cancer. For a comprehensive overview of this exciting new research we suggest you visit the Vitamin D Council website, a nonprofit organization founded and directed by Dr. John Cannell.
